TrailMade Machined Billet Aluminum Transmission Shift Knob for the 5th Gen 4Runner (2010 – 2022)
The TrailMade billet shift knob for the 5th Gen 4Runner was inspired by common challenges found on other machined billet aluminum shift knobs.
Where other lathed-style machined billet shift knobs are two-piece and one fixed etched cap design, our shift knob is one-piece and provides lots of customization. The TrailMade transmission and t-case billet shift knob design make for an easier install and are both much more customizable given our ecosystem of TrailMade cap designs.
What’s wrong with two-piece and one design?
The challenge with a two-piece shift knob is two-fold. First, the design features hardware that connects the bottom portion (the shaft) to the top (the knob). Why is this a problem? Well, positioning the logo placement in your preferred orientation requires you to adjust the bottom portion of the knob to the top all while threading on the 4Runner’s transmission rod shaft in order to find that perfect placement for your single fixed positioning etched design. The second problem is that you only have on cap design. That may not be a problem for some, but for those that want to switch it up now and then, you can’t. You would have to order an entirely new shift knob.

Patent Pending Toolless Removal Caps
What makes our shift knobs special is a number of things but most importantly, our toolless cap design removal system. Our TrailMade shift knobs feature a patent pending toolless cap removal using a magnet countersunk and machine-pressed into a lathed billet core with a beveled floor. Our patent covers any interchangeable cap design without the use of tools, among other elements. The design allows you to easily swap out the design on your shift knob by pressing down on the corner of the cap with your thumb (toolless). When the cap is pressed down on any outside edge, it drops into a beveled floor which pops the other side up. Once you have the magnetized cap up, simply remove it and exchange it with another cap design.
Anodized Color Options
We offer a wide variety of anodized options for our shift knobs and will be adding more color options as time goes on. Our goal is to have all color options for the transmission shift knob out soon; Machined/Raw, Black, Gunmetal Grey, Gold, Red, Blue, and many other options as well. If there is a certain color you would like, please contact us and we will do our best to see if it is a color offering that our anodizing shop offers. We would like to eventually have all colors to match the TRD Pro inspired line of Toyota 4Runners; Cavalry Blue, Barcelona Red, Quicksand, Army Green, VooDoo Blue, Inferno, Luar Rock, Cement, Midnight Metallic Black, and all the other base colors.
TrailMade Shift Knob Caps
We’re always adding to our line of TrailMade cap designs. Please take a look at our TrailMade caps product page to see our current offering. Our caps are made of steel and then custom printed with hard enamel color fill and feature a smooth hard-top finish resulting in a detail-driven high-end look. The final result is absolutely incredible. The details that show through our designs are down to the pixel. You will be amazed at the level of detail we achieve in the final product.
Custom Printed TrailMade Shift Knob Caps
On a case-by-case basis, we do offer custom printing, however, with the cost of the mold and the cost of printing the actual cap, the cost is much higher than purchasing a pre-printed TrailMade cap design. The cost of the mold alone is $20 and then we have a print cost and time for setting the design. At the end of the day, you’re looking at $50 to print your own design – if you want our standard hard enamel color. We do however offer custom steel with custom etching (non-hard enamel color) for much less. This is essentially the same look that would be achieved when etching a logo or design onto billet aluminum or steel. This is the look that most shift knobs on the market sell. It’s something we offer if you would like it, it’s just about your personal preference.
